African Pygmy Kingfisher

One of the most beautiful and delightful bird species ever - pygmy kingfisher, Ispidina picta.  These are fairly rare here in South Africa.  They're tiny - 5"/12 cm in total length.  Despite their name, they don't fish, but catch insects, invertebrates and small vertebrates such as lizards or frogs.  They inhabit savannah, woodland and light forest habitat; a bit skulky, they're an incredible treat to get a good glimpse of.  Small acrylic painting.
