Cypretherium

Description

Cypretherium is named for the Cypress Hills formation of Canada.  It is an Entelodont, a relative of the better known Archaeotherium, from which it differed by having just a single pair of 'bumps' on its lower jaw (Archaeotherium had two pairs) and by having rough-textured bone on its forehead.  It might have had thickened skin covering its skull.  It lived in the Chadronian age (part of the late Eocene), which lasted from about 38 to 33 million years ago.  It was about the size of a large pig, with a skull length of about 50 cm/20".  Entelodonts were probably carnivorous to a large degree.  They are somewhat distant relatives of modern pigs and peccaries.  Unlike those, they had just two hoofed toes per foot, and may have been better runners.

I see a lot of entelodonts reconstructed being extremely ugly!  Well, they did have those huge heads and jaws with the wart-like bumps, but I think they needn't have looked all that horrific!  So I'm trying for a somewhat nicer-looking depiction here.

Pencil drawing coloured with Photoshop.

If I ever saw one of these in real life. I wouldn’t hesitate to name it Lord Okotto. Even if it were female.
