This is a Common Genet, Genetta genetta. A common and widespread species, its distribution stretches from southern Africa to southern Europe and Arabia. Genets are small, cat-like carnivores, perhaps not unlike the ancient ancestors of all the cats. They are also closely related to mongooses. This species lives in dry bushy country. Several other species are found in Africa, in regions from semi-desert to dense rainforest. Genets are good climbers and at home in trees as well as on the ground. They are shy and active at night. They can be tamed and make playful pets, but it is very important to make sure that genets aren't captured and traded illegally. Watercolour.
