Description

The South African Porcupine, Hystrix africaeaustralis is, along with the Crested Porcupine which occurs further to the north, the largest rodents native to Africa.  They can reach 25 kg/55 lbs in bodyweight.  Their long spines make them seem even bigger!  The dangerous spines are concentrated towards the rear of the animal.  When threatened, it will turn its spiny back to the threat and run backwards!  This can jam the spines into the aggressor.  There are also hollow spines in its tail which it rattles to make clear that it means business.  Nevertheless, lions and leopards frequently try to catch porcupines.  They are often successful!  If they get spines in them, these usually fall out after a time, but sometimes the wounds can become septic and the predator may die.  This is a charcoal drawing, coloured with Photoshop.
