Siberian Musk Deer

Description

Musk deer are not generally well known.  They constitute a single surviving genus, of seven species, placed in their own family, the Moschidae.  This is the Siberian Musk Deer, Moschus moschiferus.  Only male musk deer have the sabre fangs, and no species has horns.  They don't have a facial gland, but the males also have a musk gland on their underside.  Musk deer aren't true deer and may actually be closer related to antelopes.  Watercolour.
